Taking a tour of underground Berlin
Hola,
Today I'm thinking about taking a tour of the underground tunnels of Berlin. There are different tours to choose from, so I think we have to choose wisely.
Tour 1: The main themes of this tour are the bombing campaign and civilian shelters, the bunker complexes as well as a selection of objects from below central Berlin, remnants from WWII.
Tour 2: Since 2004 we have been conducting tours inside the Anti Aircraft Flak tower in Humboldthain park. During this slightly more adventurous tour we explore two of the original 7 floors of Berlin's largest bunker complex. Pieces of collapse concrete support each other, and high bridges provide dizzying drops.
Tour 3: This tour shows how deep the impact of the Cold War and the Division of Berlin 1961–1989) in the Underground world has been. In the first part you will pass through the “nuclear blast-proof” bunker beneath Blochplatz, its’ white-washed walls, large metal doors and modern ventilation systems. In the second part of the tour, we will take you – via a short Subway ride to a modern civil shelter at U 8 Subway Station – the fourth largest installation of its’ kind in Berlin for 3,346 people.
Tour 4: This tour covers the global reach of this communication system, and how the varied history of this small technological communications miracle was (almost) completely forgotten for a very long time. We explore the basement levels of the Central Telegraph Office at Oranienburger Str. whilst providing a comprehensive explanation of the technical aspects of how the Rohrpost system functioned.
Exciting, oder? Apparently there is also a tour of the HUGE, "cathedral like" beer vats that stretch some 20 meters underground and are almost 200 years old.
I can't decide. Help me out.
