About Me
Wow! Where do I begin? I´m a small town girl who has ventured out into this world to get a better understanding of what is really takes to make a difference. At an early age, I discovered that my purpose is life is to be a public servant and uplift others through my gifts, talents, and any other way possible. Someone very special to me once said ¨Dont seek to be great, but seek to serve and you´ll bump into greatness along the way¨. This statement quickly became my life´s motto. I love life, politics, and cultures, but most of all I love learning and appreciating the differences we as human beings possess. I chose to study in the Dominican Republic to learn all aspects of the African influence that is exists here. As a student of Howard University, one of the most influential Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I have become highly interested in the study and advancement of the African Diaspora. I must admit this journey has been both rewarding and difficult all at once, but I am enjoying every minute of it. I hope what I have said has given you a better understanding of who I am and has also inspired you to take action and initiate the change you want to see in the world!

There was an article in the Hilltop about you today and decide to send you a message. There is so much to learn in the DR about politic, culture, economic and socialization of people. I did an exchange there in 2000 and it was life changeing. If I can put you in touch with one of very few people who consider themself Afro-Dominican that would be Blas Jimenez. He is full of information and cultural contacts. If you have any questions or if I can put you in touch with some people or get you a great meal send me an email.

Hi Erica, I actually studied in the Dominican Republic for a semester last year. I lived with a woman, her daughter and a danish student just a few blocks down from El Conde. It's fun to see the videos of your trip thus far and recognize some of the places you have been to. I hope you've gotten used to "los carros publicos." I actually really enjoyed them...most of the time. There are of course some places that you should make time to go see like Samana in the Northeast (particularly El Limon) and Bayahibe (go snorkeling). Also, if you ever get a chance I reccomend going to visit a little town called Esperanza in San Pedro de Macoris along the southern coast. The people there touched my heart in such an amazing way. In spite of all the challenges they face they keep such a strong faith. I have been helping them to raise money to buy and install toilets in various homes in the community. One more thing, if you try to get pizza anywhere besides the capital or maybe Santiago it will not come with mozzarella, but "queso" and is not good. Honestly I have so many things I could say, basically be careful and always have a copy of your passport. Oh and here are a few foods I fell in love with: maduros, jugo de limon, yucca, the fried plantains (can't remember the name), and of course pina coladas. Beware that dominican soups and stews with meat or fish often still have the bones in it. Ok that's all for now. It sounds like you are doing great things and will have a great time.

Hi Erica! I'm am too so very proud of you. You are such a special young woman. You really do touch the lives of people you meet, and I'm glad to have met you and become one of your good friends. I think it was you who actually inspired me to go abroad. Thanks hon! I miss you and I hope you are having a great time. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, don't take it for granted. Be safe and I can't wait to see you in January to share all our stories!
